Mid-century modern furniture & abstract art for this gorgeous apartment in South Bristol
Happy Monday everyone, here's the latest from the Porter & Gold HQ (aka the kitchen table). Last month I was honoured to be asked to stage a property for Jake and Lucy from Innova Property. I have long admired their style, and the kind of buildings they develop, and have followed their work for nearly two years now so it was very exciting to work with them on this new development. Innova Property is a design led property development company based in Bristol - and they have a reputation for transforming properties into the kind of places that people are proud to call their home.
Modern Vintage

This latest project is a stunning period building in central Bristol, divided into five one-bed flats. The first flat is already complete (have a look at it here!), with the others following soon. The flats are being sold through Boardwalk Property Company , who I’m thrilled to work with as their in-house home stager (scroll down to see a photo of me beaming on their homeworks page here!). Jake and Lucy’s impeccable style sets the tone for their choice of staging in all their property developments, whether they do the styling themselves or hire staging companies. They are lucky enought to have a high quality kitchen designer in their family, and they select beautiful finishes throughout, alongside paint colours from brands like Little Greene and Farrow & Ball. I added the Porter & Gold touch to their interior design by sourcing unique overhead lights for the kitchen peninsula, using linen covered cable and bronze fittings from Fraser Besants Lighting, and paired them with clear globe shades from my collection.

How we staged this apartment

Incorporating natural materials, like linen, wood and stone, is crucial to achieving a homely and desireable aesthetic in the properties we work on, and is at the heart of what Porter & Gold stand for. For the staging this apartment, we installed a mix of mid-century modern, luxurious natural fibre textiles, and a stunning antique Victorian heavy brass bed. I also brought in unique items like an abstract oil painting by Sally Coulden, that I bought at her last studio show, a hand carved Indian wooden bowl, a 1960s bamboo vintage desk and a super stylish Danish leather sofa from the mid-century collections on Vinterior . The dining chairs are a copy of (still a vintage copy!) the classic Vitra Panton design – functional, beautiful, and really (weirdly) comfy!.

Vintage: Telling Stories Within Interiors

A note on staging and designing interiors using vintage and antique pieces! As you know from my other blogs, using vintage and antique pieces has the obvious benefits of making a room look unique, and, as the items are built to last -from excellent materials - they exude quality. Finally, the environment gets a big win too by not adding to landfill or waste with new synthetically produced pieces. The unspoken visual and atmospheric impact of adding vintage and antique pieces into interior projects is that it truly adds patina and warmth to the properties we work on. It gives the homes we work with a deep sense of personal style that cannot be matched by using purely new or mass produced pieces.

The Environmental Benefits and the C02 measurements from our project for Jake & Lucy

The C02 measurements are approximate and as close as possible using the Fira report on furniture and C02:
Vintage sofa: 90kg (the equivalent of charging your smartphone 10,406 times)
1 x armchair: 40kg
Coffee tables x 2 : 36kg
Dining table: 25kg
2 x dining chairs: 54kg
Bamboo & wood desk: 35kg

The Bedroom:
King Size bed and mattress: 125kg
Chest of drawers: 43kg

Total: 448 kg of C02 saved in this project for Innova Property.

The above list of furniture does not include small bedside tables, or the textiles, art, lighting and accessories as I have not got the C02 measurements for these at the moment - however I have just met a man that has developed a C02 calculator that I am very interested to try out! I will report back when I have checked it out.
